CalHiSports.com announced their list of the Top-100 Male and Female Athletes in California State History, and UCLA was well represented as 21 women and 13 men were named to the list, and Jackie Robinson was ranked No. 1.
CalHiSports.com, the premier website for prep athletics in California, based the entrants on a 50-50 formula: what each athlete did while going to a California high school and what they did after that. This list was not a ranking of the best athletes who were from a California high school.
As a state, California continues to easily top any other state for most players in the MLB, NFL and NBA. Also, at the Athens Olympics, if California was its own nation, it would rank in the top-10 of all nations in total medals won (not including team sports such as water polo).
Jackie Robinson, a four-sport star while at UCLA, was named the No. 1 Male Athlete after inspiring a generation of black athletes with the courage he displayed in breaking the color barrier in baseball in 1947. While in high school, Robinson was a five-sport standout, competing in track, baseball, football, basketball and tennis.
