LOS ANGELES - The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's tennis team improved its record to 8-0 on the season Tuesday, dispatching of No. 45 San Diego, 6-1 in a non-conference match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who rounded out an eight-match homestand Tuesday, will take a perfect record into this Friday's first road match of the year at No. 12 USC. San Diego falls to 0-3 on the season with the loss.
Tuesday's marquee matchup in singles pitted No. 14-ranked Luben Pampoulov of UCLA against fifth-ranked Pierrick Ysern of San Diego at court No.1. Pampoulov, who owned a 19-0 record heading into the match, took the first set 6-4 and was serving at 2-3 in the second when he was forced to retire due to injury. It marked the first time that the Bruins have dropped a point in a dual match all season.
The Toreros also had a player unable to finish his match, as Robbie Blair was forced to retire in the first set against Chris Lam at court No. 3. Lam was up 5-4 when play was suspended.
The Bruins had three players post straight-set singles victories Tuesday, as eighth-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel continued his dominance, recording a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Nic Beuque at the No. 2 position. Freshmen Jeremy Drean and Mathieu Dehaine also cruised to victories, as Drean defeated Thomas Liversage, 6-3, 6-0 at court No. 5, while Dehaine was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Oscar Plotnik at the No. 6 spot.
The closest match of the day came at court No. 4, where 39th-ranked Alberto Francis battled back to defeat Mirza Koristovic, 6-7(4), 6-2, (10-8).
Prior to singles play, the Bruins posted victories on court Nos. 1 and 2 to take the doubles point. San Diego took a win on court No. 3.
UCLA's match with USC this Friday will be at the Marks Tennis Stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m.
