Bruins Take Fourth Place at SoCal Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. - Top-ranked UCLA was upended by No. 4 Stanford and then by No. 2 California during day two of the 2005 SoCal Tournament, hosted by UC Irvine. UCLA (6-2) finishes fourth at the tournament behind USC (winner), Stanford and Cal.
Senior Thomas Hopkins scored on a penalty shot 4:33 into sudden-victory overtime to propel fourth-ranked Stanford past No. 1 UCLA. Forrest Schwartz's lob shot with one second left in regulation tied the game at 8-8 for the Cardinal. Hopkins and UCLA's Grant Zider traded goals in the first three-minute overtime and neither team scored in the second three-minute extra session to send the game into sudden victory. Hopkins led the Cardinal with four goals and Zider notched four for the Bruins. Sandy Hohener of Stanford and the Bruins' Will Didinger recorded 11 saves each in goal.
Andrija Vasiljevic scored his third goal of the game with 2:35 left in the first overtime period and second-ranked California held on to defeat top-ranked UCLA 8-7 for third place in the Southern California Tournament at UC Irvine. Neither team scored in the second three-minute extra period as Cal improved to 7-1 on the season and UCLA fell to 6-2. Vasiljevic scored an extra-man goal with 1:27 left in regulation to pull Cal within 7-6 and Michael Sharf converted with five seconds left in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime. David Pietsch and Logan Powell scored two goals for the Bruins.
