UCLA Men's Water Polo Falls to California, 8-6

Los Angeles - The fourth-ranked UCLA men's water polo team lost to second-ranked California, 8-6, at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium in the SoCal Tournament semifinals. Freshman Scott Davidson tallied two first-quarter goals for the Bruins after having netted two goals against Long Beach State on Saturday.

California (17-2, 0-1) scored the game's first three goals and led the rest of the way. Senior John Mann recorded the Golden Bears' first goal with 6:45 remaining in the first period. Juniors Michael Sharf and Zac Monsees each netted goals in the first frame to give California a 3-0 cushion over UCLA (8-3, 1-0).

The Bruins responded following a UCLA timeout with 1:56 remaining in the first quarter. Davidson found the back of the cage at 1:30 and at 1:00 to cut the Golden Bears' lead to 3-2.

In the second period, California netted two goals and held the Bruins scoreless. Junior goalkeeper Mark Sheredy tallied 10 first-half saves and finished with 14. Trailing 5-2 at the break, UCLA responded in the third quarter with goals from junior Marco Santos (at 6:22) and senior Logan Powell (at 4:17).

California scored two third-quarter goals and began the fourth quarter with a 7-4 advantage. Andrija Vasilijevic recorded the Golden Bears' eighth goal of the afternoon, handing California an 8-4 lead. The Bruins registered two goals in the final 2:29 - one by senior Grant Zider and a second from Powell.

UCLA freshman goalkeeper Chay Lapin tallied three saves.

The Bruins return to the pool at 3:30 p.m. Sunday to face UC San Diego in the tournament's third-place contest at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium.
