LOS ANGELES - The No. 16 UCLA women's tennis team completed its sweep of the Washington schools Saturday, posting a 5-2 decision over the Washington Huskies in a Pac-10 showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins improve to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10, while the Huskies fall to 1-9 and 0-2 in conference play.
With storm clouds looming, Saturday's match began with singles first. The Bruins received two quick wins right off the bat when Elizabeth Lumpkin (court No. 5) and Anna-Viktoria Lind (court No. 6) finished off their opponents in less than an hour. Freshman Ashley Joelson then gave UCLA a 3-0 lead with a straight-set win over Stephanie Svanfeldt at court No. 5. That set the stage for Tracy Lin at court No. 2, as she clinched the match for UCLA with a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Victoria Brymer.
UCLA's Laura Gordon, ranked 24th nationally, was also victorious in straight sets Saturday, posting a 7-6(2), 6-2 win over No. 76 Dinka Hadzic. Washington's lone singles win came at court No. 3, where Tara Simpson downed Alex McGoodwin, 6-3, 6-3.
Two doubles matches were also played following singles play. Washington's Brymer/Hadzic downed Lumpkin/McGoodwin, 8-4 at court No. 1, while the Bruins' team of Joelson/Lin defeated Svanfeldt/Melinda Wong, 8-3 at court No. 2. Washington claimed the point due to a UCLA default at court No. 3.
UCLA travels across town next week to take on No. 5 USC on Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
