Although rain forced the majority of UCLA's Friday competitors out of both the Long Beach Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays, a few student-athletes were able to compete in some events at Long Beach on Friday.

Sophomore David Shipp ran a season-best 48.98 in the 400m to finish fifth overall. In the 400m hurdles, freshman Torsten Niegmann placed third (57.04), junior Mike Elbogen was fifth (57.92) and sophomore Jason Eiker-Wiles finished seventh (59.11).

In the steeplechase, sophomore Matt Stollenwerk finished second in a time of 9:27.60, while freshman Ryan Gordon ran a lifetime-best, 9:44.13, to finish fourth.

Competition continues on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays with the invitational section of the meet.
