FSN PRIME TICKET presents "UCLA: First to 100," a half-hour tribute and inside look at the unprecedented accomplishments and winning characteristics of the Bruin athletic department. UCLA's 100 NCAA team championship titles are spread across 16 different sports with the first title accomplished by men's tennis in 1950 and the most recent in women's water polo in May 2007.
Throughout the program, FSN PRIME TICKET reporter and host Bill Macdonald sits down with 20 past and present UCLA luminaries such as: Jeanette Bolden, Women's Head Track and Field Coach and winner of three NCAA team titles; Al Scates, Men's Head Volleyball Coach and winner of 19 NCAA team titles and Dan Guerrero, current Athletic Director who has presided over 13 NCAA titles during his administration. "UCLA: First to 100" debuts Monday, June 4 at 7:30 PM on FSN PRIME TICKET immediately following "Dodgers Live"; post-game coverage of Dodgers vs. Pirates.
Following are excerpts from the program:
Caitlin Benyi - Former UCLA softball All-American and current Student Head Coach (on the expectations of student-athletes): "This place exudes excellence. Just walking through here you see gold medals and banners everywhere. There is no denying that coming here you're expected to win."
Valorie Kondos Field - UCLA Women's Gymnastics Head Coach (on the characteristics of a UCLA student-athlete): "The people that want to be a Bruin are different. They may not be the brightest and absolutely most talented, but they are tenacious, they love to play the game and they love to win."
Dan Guerrero - UCLA Athletic Director (on attracting student-athletes to UCLA): "They come to UCLA because they expect to do well; they come to UCLA because they want to win championships; they come to UCLA because they know they are going to become better people and they come to UCLA because they want to graduate from a good institution."
Adam Krikorian - UCLA Men's and Women's Head Water Polo Coach (on winning UCLA's 100th NCAA team championship): "It's an exciting time. We're riding on cloud nine for a while, but at the same time I don't think that excitement will last too long. Because there are such high expectations, you're already looking towards the next one."
Karch Kiraly - former UCLA volleyball All-American (on UCLA's winningest volleyball coach, Al Scates): "It didn't matter how bad or good things were going, he always came in with this optimism and confidence and it was infectious."
Pete Dalis - Former UCLA Athletic Director (on John Wooden): "Wooden created a new focus and demonstrated you can win successive championships. Other coaches saw what he was doing and sought his mentorship. Even today many of our coaches will spend time with coach Wooden."
