Senior Mike Landers and junior John Caulfield led the 17th-ranked men's track and field team at the Washington Invitational in Seattle as Landers vaulted one of the top-five NCAA marks in the country and Caulfield won the shot put competition.
Landers, jumping in his first meet of the season, vaulted to an indoor lifetime-best of 17-5, a mark that should rank in the top-five in the nation next week. The jump also tied him for third overall during the meet.
Caulfield won his second consecutive shot put competition, this time with a toss of 59-10.50. The mark is an NCAA provisional qualifier, but he has a better mark of 60-8 which he threw last week in New Mexico.
Freshman Laef Barnes also had a great meet, just missing an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the mile by .69 seconds, running 4:04.69 for fourth-place overall.
In the high jump, sophomore Luke Barr jumped an indoor lifetime-best 6-10.75 to finish in a tie for third, while freshman Stan Griffin improved on his lifetime-best in the 60m with his fifth-place time of 6.93.
Senior David Murphy, who is competing for the first time in nearly a year after suffering an arm injury last season, had a strong opening performance with his fifth-place finish in the pole vault with a jump of 16-7.25.
Freshman Darius Savage improved on his indoor best in the shot put with a throw of 55-6.50 (7th-place), while junior Greg Garza also tossed an indoor lifetime-best with a put of 54-8, finishing eighth overall.
