The UCLA men's soccer team vaulted into second place in the Pac-10 Conference after a 4-1 victory at Oregon State on Friday evening. Four different UCLA players scored in the victory, including three in the second half.
Senior defender Mike Zaher opened the scoring at 14:41, scoring his third goal of the season with a shot from 25 yards out into the upper right corner of the net. The Beavers tied up the score at 35:24 when Mason Webb scored from 15 yards out after a free kick from Tim Kelly.
UCLA went on the attack in the second half, and it did not take long for the go-ahead goal to come. At 53:05, Zaher sent in a corner kick that Jason Leopoldo headed in for his second goal of the year. Leopoldo set up Maxwell Griffin at 61:41, with Griffin burying a shot from 18 yards out into the lower right corner. The Bruins received even more insurance at 84:27 when David Estrada scored on a penalty kick for his second goal of the season.
The Bruins outshot the Beavers, 14-8, including 9-5 in the second half. UCLA goalkeeper Brian Perk only needed to make one save, while Deenihan had four.
UCLA improves its record to 6-5-2, 2-1-1 in the Pac-10. The Bruins are 3-1-1 in their last five games. Oregon State falls to 4-8-0, 1-3-0 in the Pac-10. With the win, the Bruins picked up three points in the conference standings, momentarily moving ahead of second-place California by one point.
