The No. 2 UCLA Bruins used a six goal spurt in the third quarter to pull away from ASU, winning 15-9 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game Saturday afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe. The Sun Devils dropped to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in MPSF play. The Bruins improve to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in league.
UCLA began the scoring in the first quarter as Molly Cahill put one in to take an early 1-0 lead. The Sun Devils fought back tying the game with a goal by junior Katy Lawlor. The Bruins scored two more to take a 3-1 advantage, but the Sun Devils came back late in the first with goals from Amanda Stepp and Traci Aparicio to end the quarter tied 3-3. UCLA then began to pull away, taking a 7-5 halftime lead.
The Bruins then put in six straight goals to start the third quarter, pushing their lead to 13-5. ASU was held scoreless in the third quarter. The teams then exchanged goals before the Sun Devils put in three straight near the end to make it 14-9. The Devils couldn't find the net again as the Bruins put in one more to complete the scoring at 15-9.
The Bruins return home to play UC Santa Barbara at 1:00 pm PST on Sunday, March 11.
