UCLA junior Tiffany Joh fired a career-best score and the Bruins were in second place after the first day of competition at the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Legend's Club Ironhorse Course in Franklin, TN.

Sparked by Joh's tournament-best 65 (-7), the Bruins were in second place, one shot behind Arizona State. UCLA posted a team score of 281 (-7), one shot behind the Sun Devils (280, -8) and two shots ahead of Arizona (283, -5). Top-ranked Duke lurked in fourth place at 284 (-4), followed by fifth-place Florida at 285 (-3).

Joh, starting on the 10th hole, birdied her fourth, fifth and seventh holes on her outward nine for a three-under par 33. On the inward side she birdied her 12th, 15th, 16th and 18th holes for a four-under 32. Joh's score tied her for the best single round score in UCLA history with two other players. She held a one-stroke lead over Duke's Amanda Blumenherst, who carded a 66 (-6).

The rest of the Bruins were two-over par as a group, even for team scoring purposes. Sophomore Sydnee Michaels, playing at No.1, and freshman Glory Yang, playing at No.4, each posted scores of 71 (-1) and were tied for 17th. Freshman Maria Jose Uribe and junior Ryann O'Toole were tied for 49th at 74 (+2).

Junior Maiya Tanaka, playing as an individual, was tied for 24th after signing for an even par score of 72.

Second round action continues on Saturday.
