LOS ANGELES - The third-ranked UCLA women's tennis team cruised through doubles play and then won four of six singles matches to post a 5-2 victory over UC Irvine at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Thursday. The Bruins move to 2-0 on the year, while the Anteaters fall to 0-2.
UCLA had little trouble in doubles play, losing a combined four games in all three matches to eventually take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Bruins' No. 3 doubles team of Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore were perfect, taking an 8-0 win over Becky Bernhard/Ali Borowicz.
In singles play, the Bruins were paced by No. 25 Riza Zalameda, who downed Bernhard, 6-1, 6-1 at court No 1. Tracy Lin (court No. 2), Yasmin Schnack (court No. 3) and Lumpkin (court No. 5) were also straight-set winners on Thursday.
UC Irvine's two points on the day came on the back courts, as Bruin junior Ashley Joelson was forced to withdraw from her match with Jessica Broadfoot at court No. 4 due to illness. Borowicz gave the Anteaters their second point of the day, as she downed Wetmore, 0-6, 7-5, (10-8) at court No. 6.
The Bruins are in action again tomorrow, traveling to Malibu for a match with No. 19 Pepperdine beginning at 1:30 p.m.
