Bruins Travel to Bay Area before MPSF Playoffs Begin

Bruins Fall in Four to Gauchos

Sixth-ranked UCLA fell in four games at UC Santa Barbara Wednesday, dropping into a fourth place tie with Pepperdine in the MPSF race.

The Gauchos, who have won six of their last seven, won 30-21, 31-29, 25-30, 30-24 in two hours in front of 360 fans at Robertson Gym. UCSB improved to 7-7 overall, 5-5 in league, tied for sixth place with three other teams. The Bruins, who have lost three of their last five matches, fell to 10-6 overall, 7-5 in conference play.

Four UCLA players recorded double-digit kills in the loss. Juniors Sean O'Malley and Ryan Ratelle led the team with 16 kills. O'Malley totaled 18 points and Ratelle came off the bench to record 17. Sophomore Garrett Muagututia added 13 kills and junior D.J. Stromath added 10 (.400). Setter Matt Wade recorded 61 assists and senior libero Tony Ker dug 15 balls.

Freshman Jeff Menzel led the Gauchos with 21 kills (.431).

The Bruins travel to CS Northridge on Fri., Feb. 22 for another MPSF match beginning at 7 p.m.
