Senior All-American Greg Garza is one step closer to achieving the Olympic dream after throwing a U.S. Olympic Trials "A" qualifier in the discus at the Big Throws Classic in Salinas on Wednesday. Garza threw a lifetime-best 211-8 (64.53) to finish third overall in a competition which featured some of the top professional discus throwers in the nation.
That mark improved on his season-best (204-9) and lifetime-best (208-11) and makes the senior eligible for the Olympic Games if he finishes high enough at the Olympic Trials, which are held in late June to early July in Eugene, OR.
The mark does not count towards the NCAA descending order list, but will count for Trials and USATF national lists.
Sophomore Darius Savage threw a season-best 193-9 in the "A" section to finish 11th overall. In the "B" section, senior John Caulfield was fifth with a throw of 183-10 and freshman Bo Taylor was sixth with a mark of 181-4.
