Knight Wins Steeple With Season-Best & NCAA Qualifying Mark At RJ/JJK Invite

Sophomore Dylan Knight won the steeplechase to highlight the Bruin men on day two of the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational. Knight ran a season-best 8:56.19 to improve upon his regional qualifying mark and moved into the top-15 in the NCAA with that time.
In the invitational javelin, junior Andreas Drbal threw a lifetime-best 194-11 (old best, 192-1) to finish fourth overall. Junior Marlon Patterson won the open 1500m with a season-best 3:48.74, while teammate Cory Primm was second with a lifetime-best run of 3:49.15.
In the decathlon, freshman Trent Perez finished fourth with a score of 6,461 points. Perez had a strong second day as he won both the pole vault (15-5/819 pts.) and 1500m (4:27.05/764 pts.) events. Perez was sixth in the high hurdles (16.87/638 pts.), fifth in the discus (90-5/416 pts.) and fourth in the javelin (144-6/501 pts.).
Sophomore Kent Morikawa led a Bruin sweep of the top three places in the 5000m as he ran a lifetime-best and new meet record of 14:13.89. Seniors Kyle (14:15.17) and Drew (14:19.87) Shackleton rounded out the Bruin sweep in second and third-place. All three men ran below the previous meet record of 14:21.20 set in 2003.
Sophomore Scott Crawford won the open 800m with a season-best run of 1:51.10.
Competition concludes on Saturday with the invitational portion of the meet. A ceremony honoring the namesakes of the meet, Rafer Johnson and Jackie Joyner Kersee, will be held at 2:00 pm. Also on Saturday, the men's quartermile race will be called the "Wayne Collett 400m" in honor of the Bruin great. He will also be honored during the 2:00 pm ceremony.
