Freshman Trent Perez stands in third-place after day one of the decathlon competition at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational with a score of 3323 points.

Perez began the day finishing fifth in the 100m in a time of 11.62 (728 points). In the long jump, he posted the fifth-best mark of the day, 20-5.75, for 639 points. He then threw the shot put 29-1.75 for 419 points. In the high jump, Perez tied for first with a clearance of 6-3.50 (731 points) and then ended the day with the second-fastest 400m time (50.18/806 points) for a five event total of 3323 points.

He will wrap up the decathlon on Friday with the high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. Friday will also feature the open section of the RJ/JJK Invite and a distance carnival in the evening.
