UCLA's Mustafa Abdul-Hamid (men's basketball), Marco Anzures (men's cross country/track & field), Kaitlin Sather (women's volleyball) and Erica Tukiainen (women's basketball) have been named recipients of Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarships for 2009-10.
These $3,000 awards went to 38 Pac-10 student-athletes with a minimum 3.0 GPA who have also demonstrated a commitment to continuing education, campus and community involvement, and leadership. Since the program began in 1999, the Pac-10 has awarded over $1 million for postgraduate study.
To be eligible for a Pac-10 postgraduate scholarship a student athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.00 (based on a 4.00 scale) or its equivalent, be in his/her final season of intercollegiate athletics eligibility in all sports or be in his/her final year of undergraduate studies, have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team, intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time student in a graduate or professional program, and have behaved both on and off the field in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics.
Abdul-Hamid was a Pac-10 Conference Medalist this year and earned first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honors. Anzures, a 2009 NCAA Cross Country qualifier, earned a total of five Pac-10 All-Academic honors in cross country and track & field. Sather was an honorable mention All-American in 2009 and also earned first-team All-Region, All-Pac-10 and Pac-10 All-Academic honors. Tukiainen earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors three times in her career and was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 player in 2009.
