2011 Welcome Back Bruins Picnic
On the eve of the first day of fall classes, UCLA student-athletes, coaches and staff gathered at Drake Stadium on Sept. 21 for the sixth annual "Welcome Back Bruins Picnic". The event included food, games and the opportunity for new and returning Bruins to mingle and kick off the academic year.
A short program included a welcome from UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero and men's basketball head coach Ben Howland, followed by the annual team recognition for academic success in the previous year. The men's and women's golf teams swept the Donald R. Shepherd team academic awards, with men's golf earning the awards for Highest Team GPA (all sports), Highest Men's Team GPA and Most Improved Team GPA. Women's golf had the 2nd-Highest Team GPA and the Highest Women's Team GPA. Men's golf is the first men's team ever to win the overall Team GPA award.
The special guest of the evening was UCLA men's basketball head coach Ben Howland, who urged the student-athletes to get involved in the community and support each other on the playing field. Additionally, softball player Marti Reed spoke on behalf of the Bruin Athletic Council. The program ended with a traditional UCLA 8-Clap.
