LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Trevor Bauer recorded 13 strikeouts in 7.1 innings to earn the victory and lead the No. 13 UCLA baseball team past Saint Mary's, 10-2, on Saturday afternoon at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Bauer (2-1) limited Saint Mary's to two runs (one earned) and four hits in a Dodgertown Classic game.
UCLA (8-5) pounded out seven of its 15 hits in the first inning, claiming a 6-1 advantage in the opening frame. A grand slam by Dean Espy in the bottom of the first put the Bruins ahead, 4-1.
Head coach John Savage registered career win No. 200 at UCLA with Saturday's 10-2 triumph.
Espy led the Bruins with four RBI, going 1-for-3 with two runs. Rodriguez had a game-high three hits, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Pat Valaika (2-for-3, two RBI, one run) and Chris Giovinazzo (2-for-3, one run, one RBI) were the other two UCLA hitters to record at least two hits.
Bauer became the first UCLA pitcher to eclipse the 300-career strikeout plateau since 1997 (Jim Parque). Bauer's 13 strikeouts pushed his career total to 303, the fourth-highest total in program history.
Saint Mary's right-hander Martin Agosta (0-3) absorbed the loss, allowing six runs and seven hits in the first inning. Three relief pitchers for the visiting Gaels (3-8) surrendered four runs (three earned) and eight hits in seven innings.
Espy's grand slam in the bottom of the first came after the Bruins' first three hitters that inning reached base. Marc Navarro opened the frame getting hit by a pitch, Tyler Rahmatulla drew a walk and Beau Amaral reached on a bunt single. Espy blasted a 2-and-0 offering from Agosta over the fence in left-center field. UCLA scored two more runs that inning on a run-scoring groundout by Valaika and a two-out single to center by Rodriguez.
UCLA added one pair of runs in the fifth to lead, 8-1. Giovinazzo led off with a pinch-hit double down the left field line and scored on a double down the same baseline by Valaika two batters later. A single up the middle by Rodriguez plated Valaika from second base.
Saint Mary's added one run in the sixth inning on a solo homer to left field by Patrick Wisdom.
The Bruins pushed their lead to 10-2 with one run in the sixth and another in the eighth.
