SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The No. 24 UCLA baseball team lost at Cal Poly, 2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader at Baggett Stadium on Monday. Cody Regis went 2-for-2 with one home run to lead the Bruins (8-7).

Both teams will play their second game of the rain-shortened series at 4:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

Cal Poly right-hander Mason Radeke (2-1) earned the victory, limiting the Bruins to one run and five hits in 7.1 innings. Radeke notched eight strikeouts and issued one walk. Right-hander Jeff Johnson collected his second save of the season, tossing 1.2 hitless innings in relief while logging two strikeouts.

UCLA right-hander Adam Plutko (2-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs and seven hits in six innings of relief of Gerrit Cole. Plutko tallied seven strikeouts and issued one walk. Cole threw two scoreless innings as the Bruins' starter, striking out three batters while allowing one hit. Cole, the Bruins' regular Friday night starter, was lifted after two innings due to the rain-altered schedule over the weekend.

The host Mustangs (7-8) were led at the plate by Bobby Crocker, who went 3-for-4 with one run. Mitch Haniger and J.J. Thompson each went 1-for-3, with Haniger recording an RBI and Thompson scoring one run.

Cal Poly snapped a scoreless tie with one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking advantage of two infield singles. Thompson reached with a leadoff single to shortstop, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third by tagging up on a deep flyout to right field. Denver Chavez bounced an infield single over the pitcher's mound, above the grasp of Plutko, allowing Thompson to score from third base.

The Mustangs pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Crocker reached with a leadoff single to left and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. A base-hit to left field by Haniger scored Crocker from second. With runners at the corners and one out, Plutko struck out Jimmy Allen and Thompson on full counts to end the frame.

Regis led off the eighth inning with a solo homer on the first pitch of his at bat, reducing Cal Poly's lead to 2-1.
