LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Trevor Bauer recorded 10 strikeouts in eight innings to earn his team-leading fifth win as the No. 24 UCLA baseball team took down Washington, 5-3, in a Pac-10 game before 1,137 fans at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Bauer (5-1) recorded at least 10 strikeouts for the sixth time in seven starts this season, limiting Washington (7-17, 0-2 Pac-10) to three runs and six hits. He issued two walks and pushed his school-record career strikeout total to 339 as the Bruins secured their second consecutive Pac-10 series victory of the season.
UCLA (13-9, 4-1 Pac-10) won for the fifth time in its last seven contests by overcoming two deficits. The Bruins trailed 2-0 after the first half inning and were behind, 3-2, heading to the bottom of the fifth.
The Bruins' offense collected 11 hits, as Pat Valaika (2-for-4, two RBI, one run), Cody Keefer (2-for-4, one run) and Beau Amaral (2-for-3, one run) led the way at the plate. Valaika, Keefer, Amaral and Trevor Brown each had one double for UCLA in its 10th consecutive victory in the series against Washington.
Right-hander Nick Vander Tuig allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to notch his team-leading third save.
Huskies' right-hander Tyler Kane (1-2) was charged with the loss, surrendering two runs and one hit in 1.2 innings of relief. Kane issued two walks and committed one balk.
Washington scored twice in the first inning to assume a 2- 0 cushion. Joe Meggs doubled down the left-field line with one out before Jacob Lamb drew a walk. A wild pitch moved each baserunner over 90 feet, and a passed ball allowed Meggs to score. A double to right field by Troy Scott plated Lamb for the Huskies' second run.
UCLA tied the contest, 2-2, with one run in each of the second and third innings. Keefer led off the bottom of the second with a double and scored on the next at-bat, as Brown doubled down the left-field line. In the third inning, Amaral opened the frame with a single and later scored as Cody Regis grounded into a double play.
The Huskies claimed a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. With runners are the corners and nobody out, Brian Wolfe grounded into a double play to second base, allowing B.K. Santy to score.
UCLA responded with one run in the bottom half of the fifth inning, tying the game at 3-3. A double by Valaika was followed by a single by Jeff Gelalich to open the frame. Washington right-hander Jacob Clem committed a balk, allowing Valaika to score and Gelalich to take second base.
The Bruins scored twice in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. With one out, Brown drew a walk and Steve Rodriguez was hit by a pitch. A balk by Kane allowed Brown to advance to third and Rodriguez to move to second. Valaika lined a two-run single to left-center field on the next at-bat.
