No. 24 UCLA Baseball Sweeps Washington With 3-2 Victory

LOS ANGELES - Cody Regis belted a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring Dean Espy from first base to lift the No. 24 UCLA baseball team to a 3-2 victory in walkoff fashion and sweep a three-game Pac-10 series against Washington on Sunday afternoon.
Washington (7-18, 0-3 Pac-10) rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs on two hits and two infield errors, before UCLA (14-9, 5-1 Pac-10) scored one run in the bottom of the inning to secure the Pac-10 victory.
Right-hander Adam Plutko allowed one hit through seven scoreless innings, striking out six batters and walking two in a no-decision. Right-hander Nick Vander Tuig (2-1) was credited with the victory in relief, allowing two runs (both unearned) and two hits in one inning.
Washington right-hander Adam Cimber (1-1) absorbed the loss, allowing one run and two hits in 2.1 innings of relief. Huskies' right-handed starter Austin Voth allowed two runs and three hits in six innings, striking out five batters and issuing two walks.
In the bottom of the ninth, Espy lined a one-out single to center field before Regis ripped a double to the gap in left-center on a 3-and-0 count. Espy scored from first base, triggering an enthusiastic celebration as the Bruins poured out of their home dugout to mob Espy at home plate and Regis at second base.
Regis finished the afternoon going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Steve Rodriguez was the only other UCLA batter to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
In the top of the ninth, Washington led off the frame with Joe Meggs reaching first base on a throwing error by shortstop Pat Valaika. After a groundout to second base pushed Meggs to second, Troy Scott lined a run-scoring double down the left field line. Vander Tuig struck out Caleb Brown before Spencer Rogers reached base on a fielding error at third base by Regis, putting runners on the corners. Rogers moved to second on a passed ball, and a single through the left side plated pinch-runner Reggie Jones. Left fielder Cody Keefer threw out Rogers, attempting to score from second base.
UCLA scored its first run of the game in the fifth inning. With two outs, Rodriguez lined a ground ball base hit past third baseman Troy Scott, allowing Chris Giovinazzo to score from second base. The Bruins added one run in the bottom of the seventh, doubling their margin to 2-0. Regis led off with a triple to the wall in right-center field and scored on a sacrifice flyout to right by Giovinazzo.
Plutko, Mitchell Beacom and Vander Tuig combined to limit the Huskies to four hits.
