LOS ANGELES - UCLA student-athletes continue to succeed in the classroom, according to statistics for the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) released Tuesday by the NCAA.
UCLA's student-athlete GSR is 84 percent. The GSR is based on student-athletes who entered college as freshmen in the 2002-03 through 2005-06 classes and allows for the removal of those individuals from the cohort who left UCLA in good academic standing prior to the completion of their athletic eligibility.
The GSR is the NCAA's more comprehensive calculation of student-athlete academic success. The NCAA rate is more accurate than the federally mandated methodology because it is more inclusive of the total student athlete population. The GSR includes incoming transfers and students enrolling in the winter or spring quarters who receive athletics aid and graduate. Additionally, it deletes from the calculation student-athletes who leave an institution and were academically and athletically eligible to compete. The federal rate does neither.
The GSR for female student-athletes is 92 percent while the rate for male student-athletes is 76 percent.
Two Bruin squads - men's tennis and women's water polo - had GSR of 100 percent. 15 of UCLA's 20 sports programs had GSRs of 80 percent or higher, and 9 of the 20 sports were at 90 percent or higher.
