Seniors Nick Vogel and Jeremy Casebeer paced No. 2 UCLA to its 11th sweep of the season and third straight, blanking Cal Baptist Friday night in the Wooden Center.
The Bruins notched their 15th victory of the season and handed the Lancers their 13th loss. Set scores were 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 in 66 minutes in front of 716 fans.
The win was a dominating one for the Bruins, who returned from Hawai'i with a pair of sweeps after dropping a five-set match at Long Beach State on Valentine's Day. Head Coach Al Scates did not call a timeout, Cal Baptist only had four leads the entire match and the Bruins did not commit a reception error. UCLA out-blocked CBU and 12.0-3.0, out-hit the visitors .441 to .101.
Cal Baptist took a 1-0 lead in Set 2, and after the Bruins tied it, the Lancers went ahead 2-1. From there, the visitors never led, although they tied the score at eight and nine before the Bruins pulled away with a combination of solid blocking and serving.
The Lancers also held 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the third set, and were tied at eight, nine and 10 before the Bruins, behind two kills by Casebeer and an ace by sophomore Gonzalo Quiroga, forced CBU to call timeout. The 75-second rest did the visitors no good as UCLA pulled away again, out-scoring CBU 12-5 to end the set and match.
Vogel recorded nine kills (.667) and six block assists for 12.0 points and Casebeer added seven kills (.375) and three total blocks for 9.0 points. Senior setter Kyle Caldwell recorded six kills in seven swings without an error, and senior Weston Dunlap also had six kills (.455) with five block assists.
The Bruins' next home match is Wed., Feb. 29 against Long Beach State at 7 p.m. in the John Wooden Center. UCLA will travel to CS Northridge on Mar. 2 before returning home for a four-match home stand.
