The UCLA men's golf program scored a unique double victory on Tuesday, winning a match play title in Long Beach and boasting a stroke play winner in Arizona.
Because of concurrent schedules, the Bruins' top five played in the Del Walker Match Play Championship at Virginia Country Club and UCLA's five remaining players competed in the Snowman Getaway at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, AZ.
UCLA defeated top-seeded Washington 3&2 to capture the match play title, and junior Mario Clemens posted a wire-to-wire 54-hole stroke victory at Palm Valley GC.
In the match play competition, the UCLA winners were: junior Pontus Widegren, 5&4 over Larry Iverson, sophomore Anton Arboleda, 4&3 over Charlie Hughes and sophomore Patrick Cantlay 4&2 over Chris Williams. Senior Alex Shi Yup Kim lost 3&1 to Trevor Simsby and Cheng-Tsung Pan defeated junior Pedro Figueiredo, 2&1.
In Arizona, Clemens fired a 69 (-3) to finish one shot in front of teammate Jay Hwang, who posted a final round 70 (-2). Clemens captured his second collegiate title and finished at eight-under par 208. Hwang recorded his first Top 10 finish and his best collegiate result.
UCLA freshman Matt Pinizzotto tied for fourth place at one-under 215 after firing a final round 70 (-2). Freshman Preston Valder tied for 15th at 222 (+6) after signing for a 73 (+1). Junior Bobby Lange tied for 74th at 236 (+20).
