Derek Eager punched his ticket to the NCAA Championship in the javelin on Thursday after finishing in the top 12 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, TX.

Eager had a rough start to his competition as the redshirt-freshman posted marks of 198-11and 199-1 in the first two rounds. He needed a solid throw on his third attempt to finish in the top 16 and get three more throws, and came through with a mark of 214-0 and put himself into 14th heading into the finals.

Needing to finish in the top 12 to secure his spot at NCAAs, Eager opened up the finals with a throw of 214-11, followed by 216-1 and then his NCAA meet-clinching throw of 230-3 to finish eighth overall. He entered the meet ranked eighth in the West Region.

Senior Taylor Hobson wrapped up his Bruin career on Thursday as he finished 29th in the long jump with a mark of 24-3.75, just a 1/2 inch shy of his season-best mark.

Another senior, Mark Weber, also ended his career on Thursday. Unfortunately it did not end well as he fouled out in the shot put.

In the 400m hurdles, sophomore R.J. Frasier finished seventh in heat five and 39th overall with a time of 53.23 and does not advance to the quarterfinal round.

Competition continues on Friday with Maxwell Dyce in the 200m, Dillon Stucky in the triple jump and No. 1 West Region-ranked Alec Faldermeyer in the hammer.
