UCLA Olympians saw light action on August 1. The U.S. women's water polo team, led by head coach Adam Krikorian and Bruin alumnae Courtney Mathewson and Kelly Rulon, tied Spain, 1-1, while the U.S. women's volleyball team earned a 3-set victory over China.
Women's Water Polo
Guided by former UCLA head coach Adam Krikorian, Team USA remained unbeaten but settled for a 9-9 draw with Spain on Wednesday in a Group A preliminary-round match at London's Water Polo Arena. The Americans led 9-6 with less than three minutes remaining but surrendered three goals in the final 2:49 of the fourth period. Former UCLA standout Courtney Mathewson scored her only goal and Team USA's final goal at the 4:49 mark of the fourth quarter. She also added one steal on the day. Another Bruin All-American, Kelly Rulon, registered a steal and an assist in 19 minutes of action. Team USA and Spain are tied atop the Group A standings with three points each. Team USA ends group play against China on Friday, Aug. 3 at 11:40am PT.
Women's Volleyball
UCLA Hall of Fame volleyball player Karch Kiraly is an assistant coach for the U.S. women's team, which clinched a spot in the quarterfinals with a three-set sweep of China for its third win to start the Olympics. In an exciting contest which went into overtime in two of the three sets, the U.S. won 26-24, 25-16, 31-29.
Rowing
Silas Stafford and his men's pair partner Thomas Peszek finished fourth in a semifinal heat on Wednesday, posting a time of 6:58.58. The top three finishers in each of the two six-boat semifinal heats advanced to the grand final. Stafford and Peszek will race in the second final on Friday, Aug. 3.
Tennis
Former UCLA men's tennis player Marcin Matkowski and his partner Agnieszka Radwanska suffered a straight-set loss in the opening round of the Olympic mixed doubles competition on Wednesday at Wimbledon's All England Club. The Polish duo was beaten by Australia's Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur, 6-3, 6-3. Matkowski and Radwanska were seeded No. 4 in the mixed doubles draw.
