Tiffany Burgess, one of the nation's top young 800m runners, who in 2002 set a new school record in the 800m, will serve as an undergraduate assistant coach through Winter Quarter 2004 (she will graduate at the end of Winter Quarter).
Burgess' productive UCLA running career came to a close last spring (April 19), when she fractured the big toe on her right foot (requiring surgery) in the 800m invitational at the Mt. SAC Relays. Burgess' toe has healed and with rehabilitation, she will be returning to elite-level competitive running.
At the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships, she ran on UCLA's victorious distance medley relay (10:58.19) and also earned All-America honors on UCLA's 4 X 400m relay (third leg, 3:36.59, 5th place). In outdoor track, she ran the nation's fastest collegiate 800m time 2:03.73, and placed second at the Pac-10 Championships in 2:03.91.
Burgess was a cross country and track standout at Birmingham HS (Van Nuys, CA). She was a three-time City Champion in the 1600m and a two-time 800m winner. As a prepster in cross country, she was a City Champion and placed 19th in the CA State meet.
