No. 1 Bruins Down Ducks, 5-0

October 27, 2014 | Women's Soccer

Top-ranked UCLA continued to roll, defeating Oregon on the road, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon. Senior midfielder Sam Mewis recorded two goals and two assists to bolster her MAC Hermann Trophy candidacy, and goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland earned her 13th shutout of the year as the Bruins extended their unbeaten streak to 38 games.

UCLA (15-0-2, 7-0-1 in the Pac-12) got on the board early on Caprice Dydasco's second goal in three games at 9:16. After a Bruin short corner kick, Mewis played the ball back to Annie Alvarado outside the box. Alvarado one-timed to Dydasco, who finished far post past Oregon goalkeeper Abby Steele.

Mewis picked up another assist on the Bruins' second goal at 10:41. After collecting a pass from Ally Courtnall, Mewis sent a perfect cross into the box for Kylie McCarthy, whose one-time shot hit the left post and went in for her second goal in as many games.

Taylor Smith made it 3-0 at 39:11, flying in to head in a Zoey Goralski cross. The goal was Smith's fifth of the season.

Rowland made three saves in the game to earn the shutout, including a big-time one-handed save on a hard Bri Pugh shot from the top of the box in the 55th minute.

Mewis accounted for the game's final two goals, scoring both with impressive finishes. Her first goal of the game came at 62:27 off an assist by Gabbi Miranda. Mewis dribbled up to the top of the box and then unleashed a power shot to the right corner. Alyssa Alarab and Taylor Alderete set up Mewis' second goal, as Alarab made a run down the left side of the field before sending a long ball to Alderete in the corner. Alderete tracked down the ball, kept it inbounds and then found Mewis with a centering cross that Mewis one-timed with her left foot into the upper right corner. Mewis now has 13 goals and nine assists for 35 points this season.

UCLA outshot Oregon (6-8-2, 2-5-1) by a 17-4 margin. Twenty Bruin players saw action in today's game, with each totaling at least 15 minutes each.

The Bruins will head back to the Pacific Northwest next weekend with games at Washington State Friday and at Washington Sunday.
