Mewis Delivers Game-Winner Again in 1-0 Win over Colorado

October 06, 2014 | Women's Soccer

Los Angeles, Calif. - It seems as if anytime UCLA needs a goal, Sam Mewis delivers. For the second-straight game, Mewis scored the game's only goal, this time delivering the knockout blow to Colorado in the 64th minute of a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The goal was Mewis' ninth of the season. Six of those goals are game-winners.

Mewis' heroics came at 63:59 when Zoey Goralski sent a dummy pass towards Taylor Smith. Instead of Smith accepting the pass, however, she jumped over and left it for Mewis, who fired from the center of the box into the back of the net.

"The one thing we've asked of Sam is to score more goals from last year," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "She's a potent goal scorer. That's one of those goals that's just textbook. It's fun to watch those."

The Bruins (10-0-2, 2-0-1 in the Pac-12) had a 7-3 shot advantage over Colorado (8-4-0, 1-2-0) in the first half but no goals to show for it. Rosie White had the best scoring chance in the half with a shot to the far post that barely missed wide in the 20th minute. She also had another opportunity in the 28th minute after a free kick, but her shot in traffic was saved by Colorado goalkeeper Kate Scheele. Lauren Kaskie, who was making her first start of the season, also had a good look in the 19th minute, a long-distance shot that was saved by Scheele.

Although UCLA was outshot in the second half, 4-2, the Bruins had the run of play, totaling six corner kicks in the half and 10 total in the game. Mewis had both of UCLA's second-half shots, scoring on her first attempt in the half. Madison Krauser had a good look in the waning seconds of the game, but her shot was saved by Katelyn Rowland, who earned her ninth shutout of the year.

The Bruins will take on third-ranked Stanford in what is one of the most highly-anticipated matches of the season on Thursday, Oct. 9. The match will take place at UCLA's Marshall Field at Drake Stadium at 8pm and will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
