
UCLA Wins Third Straight with 92-83 Victory Over Sacramento State

LOS ANGELES – UCLA won its third consecutive game of the 2014-15 season with a 92-83 win over Sacramento State on Friday night at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins led wire-to-wire and improved to 3-4 on the year while the Hornets dropped to 1-7.
Redshirt sophomore Kari Korver led five Bruins in double figures with a career-high 22 points. Freshman Recee' Caldwell had a career-best 16 points while freshman Monique Billings also had a career-best 10 points and added 10 rebounds for the first double-double of her career.
The Bruins scored the game's first eight points and never trailed. Redshirt sophomore Kari Korver's three-pointer with 7:04 left in the first half gave the Bruins their largest lead of the game of 15 points (37-22). The Hornets were able to chip away, but UCLA still held a seven-point lead at the break (48-41).
UCLA shot 54.5 percent (18-for-33) in the first half but continued to turn the ball over (13 times). The Bruins had a slight edge on the glass (24-23). The Bruins shot at a high clip from three-point range (5-for-9, .556). Sacramento State remained close with eight three-pointers (in 31 attempts) in the opening 20 minutes.
Sacramento State would make five more three-pointers in the second half to pull to within two points (69-67), forcing UCLA Head Coach Cori Close to call timeout. The Bruins came back out in man-to-man and were able to engineer a 9-0 run to lead 78-67 and the Hornets would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Hallie Gennett led the Hornets with 20 points and seven rebounds. Fantasia Hilliard (11 points) and Adella Randle-El (10 points), were the only other Sacramento State players to reach double figures.
Junior Nirra Fields registered her third double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior Corinne Costa rounded out the five Bruins in double figures with 10 points.
The Bruins tied the Hornets with 46 rebounds each, but Sacramento State hauled in 21 offensive boards. UCLA also lost the turnover battle, 19-15, but only had six in the second half. UCLA had a great shooting night, going 49.2 percent (32-for-65) from the field and 54.5 percent (6-for-11) from three-point range. Sacramento State shot just 35.3 percent from the field, but had 20 more attempts than UCLA (30-for-85). The Hornets were 15-for-46 from three-point range (32.6 percent), which is one attempt shy of their average.
UCLA returns to action on Dec. 18 when they travel to New Orleans, La., to face Miami in the Tulane DoubleTree Classic. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
