Despite suffering an uncharacteristic loss at No. 1 doubles, where top-ranked Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady were beaten for just the third time this year, UCLA still managed to claim the doubles point over the Hurricanes. An 8-3 Bruin win at court No. 2 quickly evened things up, setting the stage for UCLA's Courtney Dolehide and Chanelle Van Nguyen to clinch the point, as they downed Lina Lileikite and Stephanie Wagner, 8-5 at court No. 3 to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
UCLA went on to claim first sets at five of six courts, eventually going ahead 2-0 in the match when 75th-ranked Catherine Harrison downed Monique Albuquerque, 6-2, 6-3. Brady would soon follow at court No. 2, as she beat Riobueno, 6-4, 6-2 to bring UCLA within a point of clinching the win.
UCLA got the clinching win at court No. 4, where Van Nguyen downed Melissa Bolivar, 6-1, 6-3 to give the Bruins the 4-0 victory.
When play was suspended, UCLA was within a game of winning matches at court Nos. 3 and 6, while at court No. 1, Anderson and Wagner had split sets and were headed to a third.
Saturday's quarterfinal showdown between UCLA and Duke is a rematch of February's ITA National Team Indoor final, a match won by Duke, 4-3. UCLA led 3-0 in that match before the Blue Devils staged a comeback. Duke is only one of two teams to beat the Bruins this year (Cal is the other).
