No. 2 UCLA Dismantles La Verne, 24-1

September 14, 2014 | Men's Water Polo

LA VERNE, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team left most of its regular starters at home after a grueling four games yesterday at the UCLA Invitational. Less than 14 hours after their exhibition win over No. 1 Stanford, the Bruins continued the momentum by posting a 24-1 win at La Verne on Sunday morning in the Inland Empire Classic.

The Bruins were led by a career-high six goals by redshirt freshman Jesse Camou and a career-best five goals by sophomore Patrick Woepse.

The Bruins dominated right from the start, jumping out to a 9-0 start at the end of the first period. Camou scored five of his six goals in the opening frame, including three counter attack goals and two from the front court. Sophomore Gordon Marshall scored twice in the first quarter from two meters. Redshirt freshman Matt Farmer also scored from two meters and redshirt freshman James Robinson added a goal from the front court to end the scoring in the first.

UCLA posted another shutout in the second period, outscoring the Leopards 7-0 to take a 16-0 lead into the break. Senior Christopher Meinhold added two goals from the front court in the second and Woepse added two goals, one from set and one on a power play. Marshall also completed a hat trick with a power play strike. Farmer added his second from two meters and freshman Alex Roelse added an exclusion goal to end the second quarter scoring.

The Bruins won the third period 4-0 to take a 20-0 lead into the fourth. Redshirt junior David Culpan got into the scoring column with a penalty shot and then Roelse added a counter attack score, his second of the game. Robinson picked up his second goal from the front court before Camou netted his sixth of the contest on a 6-on-5 opportunity to end the scoring in the third.

While the Bruins allowed their first goal in the fourth, they put up another four on the board to provide the 24-1 final. Woepse scored three of the four from three different ways (two meter, front court and power play) to end the game with five scores. Redshirt freshman Danny Marshall provided the final score from the front court, his first of the season.

The Bruins were 5-for-7 on power plays while the Leopards were 0-for-5. UCLA was 1-for-2 on penalty shots.

Senior James Hartshorne made the start in the cage for UCLA and played the entire game, registering nine saves, two steals and one assist.
