No. 2 UCLA Pounds Pomona-Pitzer, 24-0

STOCKTON, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team opened its title defense of the Kap7 NorCal Classic on Saturday morning with a 24-0 pounding of Pomona-Pitzer at Chris Kjeldsen Pool at Pacific.

The Bruins, which posted their first shutout in 71 games, dating back to a 22-0 win over Fordham on Sept. 8, 2012, were led in scoring by freshman Alex Roelse, who had a season-high seven goals against the Sagehens. Roelse has now scored at least one goal in each of his first nine games of his collegiate career.

UCLA dominated from the start, opening the game with a 6-0 lead at the end of the first period. Senior Chris Fahlsing opened the scoring with a goal from the front court (5:42), followed by a goal from two meters by sophomore Alec Zwaneveld (5:20). Fahlsing scored his second of the game on a power play at the 3:17 mark of the first period. Sophomore Gordon Marshall scored an exclusion goal (1:13) to make it 4-0. The Bruins ended the quarter with counter attack goals from senior Paul Reynolds and sophomore Jack Fellner just :15 apart (:47 and :32).

The Bruins were firing on all cylinders in the second period, outscoring Pomona-Pitzer 8-0, to lead 14-0 at halftime. Redshirt freshman Matt Farmer got things start with a goal from set at the 7:37 mark of the second quarter. Roelse then scored three consecutive goals to complete a hat trick (6:57, 5:08 and 4:24) to make it 10-0. Reynolds scored his second of the game (2:57) and then Marshall added his second (2:17) to push the lead to 12-0. Fahlsing then completed his hat trick with a counter attack score (1:51). Junior Anthony Daboub returned to the water after missing last week's games, and scored on a counter attack to end the first scoring with just :04 left on the clock.

UCLA posted identical 5-0 scores in the third and fourth periods. Marshall got things going in third third with a counter attack goal to complete a hat trick (7:12). Roelse then scored back-to-back goals (5:03 and 4:18) to give the Bruins a 17-0 advantage. A pair of redshirt freshman, Jack Grover (3:48) and Maxwell Irving (:33), each scored on counter attacks to give the Bruins a 19-0 lead heading into the fourth.

Roelse opened the fourth quarter scoring with his sixth goal of the game (7:08) followed by a second from Fellner (6:47). Roelse then capped his seventh of the contest (6:10) to put UCLA up 22-0. Farmer scored his second of the game (5:31) from two meters and senior Christopher Meinhold ended the scoring with a counter attack strike (4:09) to provide the 24-0 final.

The Bruins were 1-for-3 on power plays while the Sagehens were 0-for-1. Neither team attempted a penalty shot.

Senior Stephen White started the game and played the entire contest in goal for UCLA, registering six saves while recording the shutout. He also added four steals and two assists. Ethan Caleb Prater-Fahey started the game in goal for Pomona-Pitzer and played the first half and made three saves. Daniel Diemer played the second half in the cage for the Sagehens and was credited with two stops.

The Bruins advance to face No. 6 Pacific in the quarterfinals today at 2:40 p.m. The Tigers defeated No. 11 UC Davis, 14-6, in the first round this morning.
