"I was excited and proud of how we came out. Scoring a goal in the first three minutes was great," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "We played well and had a good defensive effort. I think we probably earned more than one goal, but Texas is a good quality team and are really well-coached. and we got the shutout and are moving on."
UCLA (7-0-1) got off to a quick start, scoring at 2:52 on Mewis' sixth goal of the season. Caprice Dydasco set up the goal with a pass to Taylor Smith, who crossed it to Mewis for the goal.
The Bruins peppered Texas (4-3-2) with 12 shots in the first half, forcing Longhorn goalkeeper Abby Smith to make four saves. UCLA's defense was its usual stingy self, allowing just one shot, which went wide in the 26th minute.
The Bruins had two solid chances in the box in the final three minutes of the first half. In the 43rd minute, Smith chased down a ball at the endline and sent it into the box towards a surging Kylie McCarthy. McCarthy challenged a pair of Texas defenders on the ball, but her shot attempt was blocked, and the Longhorns came away with the ball. And in the waning seconds of the half, Kodi Lavrusky sent a dangerous cross into the box, but it went just a wee bit too far for Ally Courtnall to take a shot.
Texas started the second half aggressively, earning a corner kick in the first two minutes of the half, but Mewis successfully headed the corner kick out of danger. Chantalle Campbell got Texas' first shot on goal of the game in the 60th minute, but her shot was easily handled by Katelyn Rowland.
Sharis LaChapelle had Texas' most dangerous chance of the half in the 67th minute, finding herself alone right in front of the box, and she one-timed a chip shot, but Rowland was there to nab it for her second save of the game. Rowland was there again in the 77th minute to make the save on a Lindsey Meyer shot that was served by Texas goalkeeper Abby Smith.
The Bruins had chances in the second half to increase their lead. Smith had a shot in the box blocked in the 52nd minute and went just wide on another shot in the box in the 62nd minute after a nice passing sequence by Lauren Kaskie and Kodi Lavrusky. Sarah Killion hit the crossbar in the 73rd minute after a corner kick, and Lavrusky got a good look in the box in the 83rd minute, but Abby Smith made a diving save.
UCLA, which has a short turnaround before its next game, which will take place Sunday at 6 pm at Drake Stadium against LMU.
