UCLA, ASU Tie in Pac-12 Opener

September 27, 2014 | Women's Soccer

No. 1 UCLA came back from its first deficit of the season to tie No. 19/24 Arizona State in Tempe, 1-1. After the Sun Devils scored the first goal of the game in the 49th minute, UCLA senior forward Rosie White tied it up in the 67th with her fifth goal of the season.

The Sun Devil defense and goalkeeper Chandler Morris kept finding ways to stop a Bruin offense that took a season-high 34 shots. Morris made 11 saves on UCLA's 12 shots on goal. Arizona State (7-1-2, 0-0-1) became the first team this season to register double-digit shots, finishing with 10. Bruin goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland made five saves.

Cali Farquharson gave ASU the lead at 48:54, getting ahead of the UCLA defense on a through ball from Aly Moon. Rowland challenged Farquharson 1v1 but was unable to stop her, and Farquharson went past a sprawling Rowland and tapped it into the empty net.

UCLA (8-0-2, 0-0-1 in the Pac-12) had a good chance to equalize just three minutes later, but Morris dove to stop a hard shot by Sam Mewis from the top of the box. Morris made another outstanding save in the 58th minute. Megan Oyster sent a dangerous ball into the box, and Morris leaped to nab it but missed and fell. She, however, scurried right back up and challenged Taylor Smith for the loose ball. Smith got a hard shot off, but Morris made the save at close-range. Morris also made a stop on one of her teammates' miscues, stopping an errant clearance from going into the back of the net in the 64th minute.

The Bruins also had some bad luck. In the 63rd minute, Zoey Goralski sent in a cross towards an open Sarah Killion. The ball, however, hit the crossbar and went straight onto Killion's thigh, sending it just wide left.

Goralski's crossing ability paid dividends in the 67th minute, however. The redshirt freshman sent a cross from the right side to Kodi Lavrusky in the box. Lavrusky headed it down towards goal, and Morris got a hand on it but was unable to control the ball. White flicked it in past Morris for the equalizer.

Annie Alvarado had a few chances in the box in the overtime period, first taking a shot that was saved in the 95th minute, then charging towards a Mewis pass in the 97th minute only to beaten to the ball by a rushing Morris, who smothered the ball before Alvarado could get to it.

UCLA's defense had some outstanding plays as well, with Abby Dahlkemper clearing an empty-net shot off the line in the 22nd minute and Caprice Dydasco sweeping away the loose-ball rebound out of danger after Rowland made a save in the 57th minute.

The Bruins, whose unbeaten streak extends to 31 with the tie, will return home for a five-game homestand beginning Friday, Oct. 3 against Utah at 8pm.
