Corvallis, Ore. - The fifth-ranked UCLA Gymnastics team opened the 2015 season with a road win over Oregon State Monday night, defeating the Beavers, 196.000-195.450. Senior Samantha Peszek won the all-around with a score of 39.55 and captured first place on vault with a 9.95 and floor exercise with a 9.875. Redshirt sophomore Christine Peng-Peng Lee made a stunning collegiate debut after sitting out nearly three years with a knee injury, winning the uneven bars with a 9.9 and balance beam with a 9.875.

The Bruins led from start to finish, taking a 49.075-48.925 lead after the first rotation, led by Lee's winning score of 9.9 on bars. Peszek added a 9.875, and freshman Sonya Meraz scored 9.775 in her collegiate debut.

UCLA increased its lead in the second rotation after scoring 49.3 on vault. Five Bruins scored 9.825 or higher, led by Peszek's 9.95 on an effortless stuck Yurchenko layout full. Lee (9.825) and Sadiqua Bynum (9.875) also stuck their vaults. Newcomers Jordan Williams and JaNay Honest got great distance on their vaults and scored 9.825.

Some uneasy landings made for lower scores on floor exercise in the third rotation (48.7), but the Bruins sure did entertain with their unique routines and choreography. Peszek led the way with her meet-winning 9.875, and Mikaela Gerber delivered a great performance that scored 9.725. Freshman Napualani Hall scored 9.675 in her collegiate debut.

The Bruins battled through an early fall on balance beam in the final rotation, with their final two performers hitting clutch routines - Gerber for a career-high 9.8 and Lee for a 9.875. Also scoring were Peszek with a leadoff 9.85, Sophina DeJesus with a 9.75 and Ellette Craddock with a 9.65.

UCLA will host Arizona on Monday, Jan. 19 in the team's home opener in Pauley Pavilion. The meet will begin at 1pm. Tickets are on sale now at the UCLA Central Ticket Office or at Ticketmaster. Parking is free on campus for the holiday.
