STANFORD, Calif. – UCLA (10-15, 6-8) dropped its 20th-straight game to No. 19 Stanford (19-7, 11-3) 68-50 on Sunday afternoon in Maples Pavilion.
The Bruins started off hot and scored the first four points of the game and led 14-7 after a jumper by senior center Corinne Costa (11:47). But the Cardinal's Samuelson sisters got hot and hit five three-pointers to end the half. Karlie Samuelson started a 10-2 run for Stanford (10:57) with a three-pointer as the Cardinal led 17-16 (7:36). After freshman Lajahna Drummer pulled the Bruins to within one at 20-19 on an and-one (6:32), Stanford went on a 10-0 run to lead 30-19 (3:43) on a jumper by Lili Thompson. The Cardinal led 37-24 at the break.
The Bruins shot just 36.7 percent (11-for-30) in the first half while Stanford made 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from the field. The Cardinal made five three-points (in 12 attempts) compared to 0-for-3 for UCLA. The Cardinal also used a 13-7 foul disparity to have a 14-3 lead in free throws attempted in the first half. Both teams had 18 rebounds.
In the second half, the Bruins never got closer than 10 points as Stanford had an answer every time UCLA tried to get the momentum back. The Bruins missed many layups and the Cardinal would respond with a three-pointer, usually by Bonnie Samuelson. The senior forward burned UCLA for 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting from three-point range.
Jordin Canada was the only Bruin to reach double figures with 10 points.
Bonnie Samuelson (24 points), Karlie Samuelson (14 points) and Lili Thompson (12 points) rounded out a trio of Cardinal players in double figures. Kaylee Johnson had just four points, but added a game-high 11 rebounds.
For the game, UCLA outrebounded Stanford 39-36, but allowed the Cardinal to shoot 44.4 percent (12-for-27) from three-point range while going 0-for-3 from long range. Usually a strength, today the Bruins' bench was blitzed, 38-17, the most points and margin all season.
TIP-INS
STANFORD: The eight three-pointers by Bonnie Samuelson were a career-high and the most UCLA has allowed to a player this year.
UCLA: Redshirt sophomore guard Kari Korver was 0-for-1 from three-point range, finishing the game with six points, and had her streak of consecutive contests with a three-pointer come to an end at a personal-best 11 games.
AGAINST RANKED TEAMS
UCLA dropped its 16th consecutive game to a ranked team with the 68-50 loss at No. 19 Stanford. The Bruins' next game is also against a ranked opponent.
