OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - Senior Jake Knapp won a pair of matches during the match play rounds of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club this week, but fell on Thursday afternoon in the Round of 16. Knapp went the distance and then some in each of his first two matches on Wednesday and Thursday morning before falling 2 and 1 in the afternoon.

Third Round Match Play Recap - Thursday Afternoon
The third-seed Knapp won the first hole against #19 Austin James, but losses on #3, #5 and #7 put the Bruin senior behind 2-up. Knapp came back with victories on the eighth and the 11th to square the match, but James equaled those with wins on the 12th and 14th to again go ahead by two. The next three holes were halved, eliminating Knapp.

Second Round Match Play Recap - Thursday Morning
Despite going the distance, Knapp never trailed in his match with #35-seed Chelso Barrett. After halving the first three holes, Knapp won the fourth and fifth to go 2-up. Barrett came back with a win at the sixth, but Knapp reclaimed his 2-up lead with a victory at the eighth. 

Knapp's lead extended to 3-up at the 11th, but back-to-back wins for Barrett at #12 and #13 made it a 1-up lead for the Bruin. Each of the next five holes would be halved, which was enough to propel Knapp into the third round.

First Round Match Play Recap - Wednesday
Halving holes was not in the cards for Knapp and #62-seed Noah Goodwin at the start of their match, as each of the first seven holes, as well as nine of the first 10, were won by either golfer. Knapp took the first two, Goodwin claimed the next three and Knapp came back with wins on #6 and #7 to go 1-up before the first halve of the match at #8. A victory for Goodwin on the ninth squared the match heading towards the back nine.

The second nine began the way the first started, with a win for Knapp on the 10th. Each of the next six holes were halved, keeping Knapp 1-up, but a birdie for Goodwin on the 17th sent the match to 18 all square, where each player bogeyed to force extra holes. Going back to the front nine, each player parred the first two before a birdie on the third (21st hole) by Knapp finished off the match.

Stroke Play Recap
Knapp was third after the first two rounds of stroke play, which took place Monday and Tuesday, and for Knapp, spilled into Wednesday morning after a weather delay Tuesday morning. Following an opening-round, even-par 70, in which he made five birdies and five bogeys, Knapp fired a five-under 65 in round two to jump up to third place. He had four birdies and a hole-out eagle on the 14th to equal the best round in the field during stroke play. (Knapp Post-Round Press Conference).

Senior Jonathan Garrick shot a two-round score of 143 (+3), going 72 on Monday and 71 on Tuesday. After finishing in the middle of the afternoon on Tuesday, Garrick had to wait until Wednesday morning to see if he would make a playoff to get into the round of 64, which he did. The playoff began with 18 players looking for 10 spots. Garrick parred each of the first two playoff holes, seeing four players get eliminated, but eight advance to the match play with better scores. On the third playoff hole, with just two spots remaining for six golfers, Garrick made bogey to miss out on the match play.

Tyler Collier, who transferred to UCLA last winter from Oregon State and will be eligible to play with the Bruins in the spring, also missed the cut with a two-round score of 150 (+10).
