SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - The seventh-ranked Bruins open up their 2015-2016 season in the outskirts of the Windy City this weekend, taking part in The Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms.

The tournament begins on Saturday with 36 holes of action and concludes on Sunday with 18 more holes. Rich Harvest Farms, which will host the 2017 NCAA Championships, is a par 72 course with a distance of 7,151.

The five starters for the Bruins are seniors Jonathan Garrick and Jake Knapp and freshmen Phil Delisi, Cole Madey and Patrick Murphy. Sophomores Brandon Mai and Corey Shaun will be playing as individuals.

The Bruins were ranked seventh in the Bushnell/Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll. Also in this weekend's field are top-ranked Illinois, which defeated UCLA in last year's NCAA Match Play quarterfinals, and #24 Virginia, as well as Houston and Purdue, which are each receiving votes in the preseason rankings.

Garrick was named a Second Team All-America last season after leading the Bruins with a 71.2 scoring average. He finished in the Top 10 seven times, including third-place finishes at the Pac-12 Championships and the NCAA Regionals. Garrick and Knapp will each have some prior experience on the Rich Harvest Farms course after both competed in August's Western Amateur.

Knapp, who was the individual medalist in last year's season-opening tournament (Husky Invitational), is coming off a successful summer in which he played in the U.S. Open and reached the third round of the U.S. Amateur and the semifinals of the Western Amateur.

The Bruin squad will also feature a trio of talented freshmen. Delisi, out of Tokyo, Japan, never finished outside of the Top 25 in seven straight AJGA starts and won the 2015 Creative Tour Pocari Sweat Cup. Madey (West Linn, Ore./Lake Oswego HS) is the back-to-back, Oregon 6A State Champion and was the runner up at the Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur. Murphy, native of Calgary, claimed the Alberta Match Play Championship this June and is one of the best juniors to come out of Canada.

Mai and Shaun played in five and four tournaments, respectively, during their freshman seasons. Mai had six under-par rounds, while Shaun posted two rounds under par a year ago.
