
UCLA Wraps Up Pac-12 Championships

COLFAX, Wash. – The UCLA cross country team wrapped up competition Friday morning at the Pac-12 Championships, held at the Colfax Golf Club. The Bruins were paced by some strong individual performances as the men placed fifth and the women finished ninth.
Senior Lane Werley was the top Bruin on the day as he finished fifth with a time of 23:19.1. The fifth place showing is the best for a UCLA harrier at the meet since Werley also finished fifth in 2012.
Sergey Sushchikh was the next finisher for the Bruins, coming in 25th overall with a time of 23:54. Nick Hartle closely followed in 28th with a time of 23:57.4.
Jonah Diaz and Myles Smith crossed the line in back-to-back spots with Diaz finishing in 34th with a time of 24:07.8 and Smith following in 35th at 24:12.5. Austin O'Neil was 41st with a time of 24:25.8 while Richard Ho rounded out the UCLA top-7 in 50th place with a time of 24:44.1.
Also competing for the Bruins was Sahm Bazargan (62nd, 25:05.2) and Daniel De La Torre (64th, 25:14.1).
The UCLA women placed ninth overall and were paced by freshman Carolina Johnson. In her first ever championship at the collegiate level, Johnson placed ninth overall with a time of 20:17.5. She was the top freshman finisher in the field.
Ashlee Powers and Julia Rizk came in back-to-back spots as Powers was 65th overall with a time of 21:39.9 while Rizk followed in 66th at 21:42.4.
A pack of Bruins followed as Aliya Shirif was 71st with a time of 21:44.1, Roni Yamane was 72nd at 21:46.5, Emily Scharmann placed 75th with a time of 21:51.8 and Taylor Taite was 76th in 21:52.2.
Rounding out the Bruins was Sabrina Seay (92nd, 22:25.5), Kelly Brooks (96th, 22:46.8) and Jessica Cushing-Murray in 103rd with a time of 23:31.2.
The NCAA Regional Championships will be Friday, Nov. 13. The West Regional (hosted by University of Washington) will be held in Seattle. The NCAA National Championships are being held in Louisville, Ky. (hosted by University of Louisville) on Saturday, Nov. 21.
