Sell Falls to de Vroome in Final
November 01, 2015 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- UCLA senior Karue Sell fell to Max de Vroome of USC in the championship match of the So Cal Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday afternoon. Despite rallying to force a third set, Sell was unable to overcome de Vroome's late surge to take the title.
"He was serving really well," said Sell of his opponent. "I couldn't really do anything on his serve. I adjusted a little bit and I was making more returns at the end. I just didn't play good service games in the last set. There were a couple points here and there that just went the other way."
De Vroome edged Sell, 7-6, in the first set after forcing a tiebreaker. The cross-town rivals were tied at 3-3 in the second set, when Sell broke de Vroome's serve to take a 4-3 lead. Third-seeded Sell took the second set, 6-4, after converting a deuce point.
The championship match would be decided by a third set. Sell took an early 3-2 lead over the first-seeded Trojan, but was unable to hold. De Vroome battled back to take the set, 6-3, and capture the title.
"This was a good tournament for me," said Sell of his overall performance. "I had a tough week, but I got my game going and was playing well. I had five matches in a row and I played pretty good tennis."
