Men's Tennis Falls to Gauchos in Kickoff Weekend Title Match

LOS ANGELES โ No. 10 UCLA men's tennis dropped a 4-1 decision to UC Santa Barbara in the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match Saturday at Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCSB secured the doubles point before winning the final three singles matches.
Aadarsh Tripathi picked up the Bruins' (2-1) lone win. Lucca Liu, Charlie Underwood and clincher Diogo Morais won in order for the Gauchos (3-0), who qualified for next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championship tournament in Dallas, Texas and Waco, Texas.
Liu and Miguel Avendano teamed to win five of the first six games on the second doubles court before defeating No. 47 Quan/Tripathi 6-2. The initial point was then secured on Court 3, where Morais and Lorenzo Brunkow topped Gianluca Ballotta/Andy Nguyen 6-3.
Each team took three first sets. Tripathi turned in an emphatic victory in his first singles action of dual play. The senior evened the score with his 6-1, 6-1 display against Carson Lee on Court 5. Spencer Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels of UCLA looked destined for singles wins, but UCSB's trio finished theirs before the Bruins.
A top-70 matchup on Court 1 went the way of No. 70 Liu, who bested No. 53 Quan 6-3, 6-4. On Court 6, Underwood then knocked off Ballotta by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Finally, Morais beat Nguyen 6-2, 6-3 on Court 4 to punch the Gauchos' ticket.
UCLA now heads north for non-conference matchups with No. 3 Stanford and No. 15 California. The Bruins visit Stanford's Arrillaga Tennis Center โ Taube Pavilion on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 12 p.m. PT before completing their trip at Cal's Hellman Tennis Complex on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 12 p.m.
