UCLA Falls to No. 4 Stanford, 2-0
November 02, 2015 | Women's Soccer
UCLA held off fourth-ranked Stanford for the first 61 minutes of the game but gave up two second-half goals, losing to the Cardinal, 2-0. The victory clinched the Pac-12 title for the Cardinal, who improved to 16-2 overall and 10-0 in the conference. UCLA dropped to 8-9-1, 4-5-1 in the Pac-12.
The Bruins played quality defense in the first half, limiting Stanford to just two shots on goal, both of which were saved by Siri Ervik. The Bruins' lone shot was taken by Amber Munerlyn, a nice strike that was saved cleanly by Jane Campbell in the 42nd minute.
Unfortunately, it was a defensive miscue by the Bruins that led to the game's first goal. In the 62nd minute, Kyra Carusa stole the ball off the feet of Hailie Mace just outside the box and surged ahead to shoot past Ervik from about 12 yards away for the game's first goal. Stanford doubled up the score in the 84th minute on a header by Megan Turner off a cross by Mariah Lee.
The Bruins had an opportunity to tie in the 77th minute, earning a corner kick, but Zoey Goralski's header popped up high. Down 2-0 in the 88th minute, a perfectly-placed Darian Jenkins cross found Kodi Lavrusky in the box, but Lavrusky's hard shot went wide. Jenkins had a shot in the final minute as well, but it also went wide.
UCLA will finish out the season with a big rivalry game against USC on Friday, Nov. 6. The Bruins are looking to pack Drake Stadium for the Crosstown Cup Showdown. Game time is at 6pm, and tickets are on sale at uclabruins.com/tickets.
