Canada Named to Naismith Watch List

LOS ANGELES - UCLA sophomore point guard Jordin Canada was named to the Naismith Trophy's Early Season Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today. The watch list includes 50 of the top women's collegiate basketball players who will be in the conversation for the prestigious honor. Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, inventor of the game of basketball, the Naismith Trophy recognizes the top Men's and Women's College Basketball Players of the Year.
The watch list will be pared down to 30 during the midseason and announced in early February, followed by a semifinalist of 10 announced in early March. The four finalists for the award will be announced in mid-March, with the winner presented on Monday, April 4.
Canada is currently leading UCLA in scoring at 19.2 points per game, which ranks sixth in the Pac-12 and 39th in the country. She also paces the Bruins in assists at 6.0 apg, which ranks third in the league and 24th nationally.
She is one of eight sophomores in the top 50 and one of eight players from the Pac-12 selected. Canada joins Oregon State seniors Ruth Hamblin,and Jamie Weisner, and junior Sydney Wiese, Oregon senior Jillian Alleyne, Washington's Kelsey Plum, California's Courtney Range and Stanford'sLili Thompson on the list to watch this season for the prestigious honor.
A men's Naismith winner has been selected annually since 1969 and the inaugural women's trophy was presented in 1983. For more information on the award, visit naismithtrophy.com.
