UCLA Sweeps the Jim Bush Team Invitational

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team swept the men and women's competition in the inaugural Jim Bush Team Invitational on Tuesday at Drake Stadium. The women tallied 164 points to outdistance Washington State (152) and Long Beach State (88). The men won with a score of 147 to down Long Beach State (132) and Washington State (118).

In front of a national audience on the Pac-12 Networks several Bruins put together some lifetime performances and UCLA top-10 marks.

In the women's high jump senior Zibby Boyer soared to new heights as she cleared two personal bests en route to winning the event. She started by clearing 6-0.50 and then went on to leap over 6-1.25. That mark is tied for fourth all-time in the UCLA top-10. Senior Alexis Walker placed second with a jump of 5-11.25.

In the women's javelin sophomore Zaybree Haury opened her season with a big throw. Haury tossed a personal best of 160-0 to win the event and etch her name as third all-time at UCLA.

Sophomore Torie Owers had a big day in the throws for the Bruins as she won both the shot put and discus and placed third in the hammer. Owers won the discus with a throw of 145-4 and the shot put with a mark of 48-4.50.

Also scoring in multiple events for the Bruins was freshman Jessie Maduka. The newcomer won the long jump with a leap of 20-1.75, was second in the 100m with a time of 11.96 and anchored the winning 4x100m relay team. She closed out the meet by running a leg on the 4x400m relay that finished second with a time of 3:48.13.

Other event winners for the Bruins in the women's competition were senior Ida Storm in the hammer throw. The All-American won with a mark of 201-11. Senior Elena Clarke cruised to a victory in the pole vault with a jump of 12-11.50. On the track, senior Kelsey Smith opened with a win in the 1,500m with a time of 4:27.60 while senior Brea Buchanan won the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.61. In her first 800m race senior Ally Courtnall won with a time of 2:11.84.

The men also put together some strong performances. Junior Nicholas Scarvelis won the shot put with a national-leading mark of 64-1. He also placed second in the discus with a throw of 173-3. Freshman Braheme Days was second in the shot put with a throw of 61-10.50.

Senior Derek Eager unleashed his best throw in the javelin in thrilling fashion. Sitting in third place in the final round, Eager tossed his best mark since 2012 with a throw of 223-0 to win the event. Senior Alec Faldermeyer returned from his redshirt campaign by winning the hammer throw with a mark of 198-8.

On the track freshman Leon Powell won the 100m with a time of 10.59. He also placed third in the 200m at 21.48 and ran the anchor leg on the 4x100m relay.

The Bruins got big points in the 1,500m as senior Daniel Herrera returned from his redshirt campaign to finish second in a time of 3:46.26. Junior Ferdinand Edman followed in third at 3:46.43 and junior Lane Werley crossed the line in fourth at 3:47.03.

Junior Nick Hartle ran a very impressive early season time in the 800m by placing second with a 1:47.68. He also ran a leg on the winning 4x400m relay team.

In the 400m freshman Joe Herrera opened with a 47.15 to place second while sophomore Jonny Moniz followed in third at 47.76. The duo bookended the winning 4x400m relay.

UCLA will spend the rest of its spring break in Tempe, Ariz., at the Arizona State Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational. The two-day meet will begin on Friday, March 27.
