April 25, 2015 | Baseball
STANFORD, CALIF. – The No. 3 UCLA Bruins dropped the series opener to the Stanford Cardinal, 6-1, on Friday evening at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Trent Chatterton drove in the lone run for the Bruins in the second inning.
Cardinal starter Brett Hanewich (3-3) earned the victory, allowing one run on three hits in a complete game effort. UCLA's James Kaprielian (7-4) had a tough night, allowing a season-high six runs, five earned, on 12 hits to garner the loss for the Bruins.
Trent Chatterton, Darrell Miller Jr. and Kort Peterson each had one hit for the Bruins.
UCLA (29-9, 14-5) tallied the game's first run with a two-out rally in the top of the second inning. After the first two Bruins were retired, Kort Peterson singled and Christoph Bono walked to set up Trent Chatterton. The UCLA second baseman subsequently cashed in with a single through the left side of the infield to score Peterson from second and give the Bruins an early 1-0 edge.
Stanford (18-21, 5-11) answered back in the bottom of the fourth with three-straight hits to push across the tying run. Zach Hoffpauir, Beau Branton and Jack Klein all singled to left field consecutively to score the Cardinal run. With two on a no outs, Kaprielian then worked out of a jam with a pop-out and a double play to end the threat.
However, the Cardinal erupted for four runs in the next inning to take a 5-1 lead over UCLA. Seven-straight Stanford batters reached, totaling five singles, a walk and an error, to result in the first three Stanford runs. Jonny Locher then knocked in the fourth tally on a sacrifice-fly to left field to cap the four-run fifth inning for the Cardinal.
Scoring for the third consecutive inning, Stanford tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth. Hoffpauir delivered Drew Jackson from third with his second RBI-single to give the Cardinal a five-run advantage, 6-1.
UCLA was unable to rebound and did not record a hit over the final three innings to eventually earn the loss.
Game two of the weekend series between UCLA and Stanford will begin tomorrow at 7:00pm PT at Sunken Diamond. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU and will also feature a live audio broadcast on uclabruins.com.
Notes: Stanford's 15 total hits (all singles) are the most the Bruins have allowed in a game this season. The 12 hits allowed by James Kaprielian mark a career-high for the UCLA right-hander.
