Women's Tennis Blanks Idaho, 4-0 in NCAA First Round
May 09, 2015 | Women's Tennis
UCLA cruised in all facets of Saturday's contest, dominating doubles play with wins at court Nos. 1 and 2. After Terri Fleming and Catherine Harrison notched an 8-1 win at the No. 2 spot, UCLA's ninth-ranked Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady clinched the point at the top spot, downing Galina Bykova and Emmie Marx, 8-2. UCLA was leading 7-2 at court No. 3 when play was suspended.
It was much of the same in singles play, where UCLA lost a total of just four games in its three completed matches. Harrison, this year's Pac-12 singles champion, was the most impressive at court No. 4, where she blanked Rita Bermudez, 6-0, 6-0. Fleming soon followed right next door at court No. 5, where she beat Belen Barcenilla, 6-1, 6-0.
Anderson got the clinching victory for the Bruins at court No. 1, as she downed Bykova, 6-1, 6-2. It marked the 120th victory of Anderson's career, putting her into a tie for second place all-time at UCLA with Annica Cooper, who played at UCLA from 1997-2000. Both players trail only Keri Phebus (144) in all-time wins at the school.
The winner of Sunday's match will earn a place in the NCAA Round of 16 in Waco, Texas.
