
Jenkins' Goal Leads UCLA to 1-0 Win

San Diego, Calif. - Darian Jenkins scored the golden goal in the second overtime period to break a scoreless tie and give UCLA its first victory of the season, 1-0 over San Diego.
Jenkins' one-timer off a cross by Zoey Goralski ended the game at 102:25 and sent UCLA home a winner. Freshman Hailie Mace was also credited with an assist.
The Bruins dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Toreros, 20-5, allowing zero shots on goal and holding an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. USD goalkeeper Michelle Craft kept her team in the game with seven saves. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Cassie Sternbach earned her first career shutout.
UCLA was dangerous on set pieces throughout the game but could not break through in regulation. After the Bruins earned a corner kick in the sixth minute, Taylor Smith's shot was saved by Craft, and Kristiana Konkol-Mroczkowski's follow-up shot went wide. The Bruins had another chance off a corner kick after Jenkins' shot in the 16th minute was saved by Craft, but Kodi Lavrusky put her shot wide. Konkol-Mroczkowski got two shots off after a Bruin corner kick in the 36th minute, but her first was blocked, and her second missed wide.
San Diego had its best chance in the first half come in the 41st minute when Victoria Walker took a shot that pinged off the crossbar.
The Bruins came out swinging early in the second half with a pair of MacKenzie Cerda shots, one saved and the other blocked. Lauren Kaskie curled a direct free kick on frame in the 50th minute, but Craft was once again there to make the stop.
UCLA pushed late in the game to get the first goal. The Bruins had another set piece opportunity in the 78th minute on a corner kick, but Smith's shot went wide right. Craft came up with two big saves in the final six minutes of regulation, one in the 85th minute off Kaskie, and another in the 86th off Smith. San Diego got two shots off in the final two minutes, but each went wide.
After an uneventful first overtime period, the Bruins made quick work of the Toreros in the second, with Jenkins scoring the game-winner a little less than two and a half minutes into the period.
With the win, UCLA pulls even at 1-1. San Diego drops to 1-1. The Bruins will next host Wisconsin on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 4pm at Drake Stadium. Tickets are on sale now at uclabruins.com/tickets.
