Bruins Listed in Fall ITA Rankings

September 15, 2015 | Men's Tennis

Skillman, N.J. – Two UCLA men's tennis players are ranked in singles to begin the year, as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its 2015 Preseason Rankings on Tuesday.  Fresh off of his win at the 2015 American Collegiate Invitational at the U.S. Open, junior Mackenzie McDonald is ranked No. 3 nationally behind Axel Alvarez Llamas (Oklahoma) and Ryan Shane (Virginia).

A two-time All-American, McDonald was the 2014-15 Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Year and a first-team All-Pac-12 selection.  He ended his sophomore season with a team-best 29 singles victories and was named to the 2015 USTA Collegiate National Team.   Last October, he won the singles title at the 2014 USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships.  In UCLA's NCAA Round of 16 showdown with top-ranked Oklahoma last season, McDonald upset the nation's No. 1 singles player, Axel Alvarez, in straight sets at court No. 1.  McDonald was the only player to beat Alvarez all season in a dual match.

Joining McDonald in the rankings is sophomore Martin Redlicki at No. 57.  The 2014-15 ITA Rookie of the Year, Redlicki posted an impressive 26-7 singles mark in his debut season with the Bruins.  Redlicki earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors and ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.

In doubles, McDonald and Redlicki are ranked No. 6 in the nation.  The pair was 19-8 on the season and 12-5 in dual-match play at the No. 1 position last year.  They were ranked in the top 10 nationally for much of the year, climbing as high as No. 5 in the country in February.  Last October, they won the doubles title at the 2014 USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships.
